One of the most famous tourist attractions of Thailand is the Damnoen Saduak floating market which is located about 100 km southwest from Bangkok. After having a very nice breakfast in our hostel, we got into the minibus to drive us to the floating market, as we had booked a guided tour via a local tourist office.
A floating market is a market where merchandise is sold from boats. The colorfully merchants at these lively markets paddle along congested small canals in sturdy thai style canoes laden with fresh fruit, vegetables and sweets to sell to shoppers on the banks.
Many floating markets today can be found in Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam but Damnoen Saduak floating market in Thailand is the most famous, so we couldn’t miss it! The excellent quality soil beside the canal is very fertile and suitable for growing many kinds of fruits and vegetables.
It is highly recommended to visit this buzzing market early in the morning before the crowds arrive and the heat of the day builds up. Apart from fruits and vegetables, local food is cooked as well from floating kitchens located right on the boat, and believe me it’s awesome!
After walking around and taking many many pictures, we had arranged a boat tour around the small canals of the village. The verdant scenery was amazing! It was so nice to watch how simple was the life of the people there and how satisfied and happy they were with that way of life.
Even though it may not be something as stunning and majestic as other places we’ve been ,it is a typical part of the culture and everyday life for lots of Thai people. We tried some very nice traditional thai food and we bought some souvenirs. The Floating Market is definitely a must see!
